Tribute

John L. Anderson, 87 of Amarillo died July 29, 2021.

Funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m., Monday, August 2, 2021 at Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia. Interment will be private in Llano Cemetery.

John was born January 12, 1934 in Preston, Minnesota to Julian Frances Anderson and Florence Ann Nupson Anderson. In 1952, he graduated from Lovington High School in Lovington, New Mexico and attended New Mexico State and College of the Southwest, Hobbs, New Mexico.

John married Margaret Dunlevy April 1, 1972 in Dallas, Texas. They owned Anderson’s Travel, Inc. in Hobbs, New Mexico for 12 years. While in Hobbs, John was a charter member of Trinity Lutheran Church, chairman City of Hobbs Park & Recreation Board, and chairman, Industrial Air Park Board. He also served the Hobbs community as President of the Kiwanis Club, President Chamber of Commerce, and Chairman of Hobbs Chamber of Commerce Transportation Commission, member of Hobbs Rotary Clubs, College of the southwest Trustee and Trustee of Trinity Lutheran church. John loved basketball and was a 19 year member of the New Mexico Basketball Association.

In August 1959, he was employed by New Mexico Electric Service Company which merged with Southwestern Public Service Company (“SPS”). John transferred to Amarillo as Vice President, Personnel, in March 1986. He retired from SPS in February 1997.

Community service in Amarillo included servicing as a member of the Amarillo chamber of Commerce Aviation Committee and Political Affairs Committee, past President and Interim Director of High Plains Epilepsy Association, and was a member of the Amarillo Country Club. John was also a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church.

John was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret, on March 10, 2007; and a brother, Christopher “Kick” Anderson of Carlsbad, and a sister Joie A. Lee of Lovington, NM.

He is survived by three daughters, Norrie Maciel of Lubbock, TX, Kristie Condry of Dallas, TX, and Lisa Papapietro of Gilbert, AZ; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchild; seven nieces and two nephews.

Mr. Anderson requests in lieu of flowers memorials be given to his favorite charities, High Plains Epilepsy Association, 3505 Olsen Blvd., Amarillo, Texas 79109 or to the John and Margaret Anderson Leadership Scholarship Fund c/o St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church Youth Organization, 4100 S. Coulter, Amarillo, Texas 79121.
